I’ve struggled with acne since I was 14 years old.
And no, not just little breakouts and whiteheads. I’m talking BIG cysts. They gathered all along my cheeks and jawline, often painful to the touch.
When I was 17, my acne was it’s worst. I went to the dermatologist in desperation and was put on accutane, which I absolutely do not recommend to anyone. This poison caused me to have back pain for years and created stomach problems that plagued me for almost a decade. Whatever you do, don’t take this drug! It did, in combination with the birth control pill, seem to calm my acne down. But it wasn't a cure. It masked the underlying problem- hormonal and gut imbalances.
I stayed on the birth control pill up until 2015 (age 25), almost too scared to get off of it in case my skin broke out again. With the help of a nutritional therapy practitioner, I changed my diet and finally got off the pill. It took about 3 months for my body to completely detox and then came the cystic acne again about 6 months after getting off the pill. My diet was ON POINT and my face still covered with cystic acne. WTH? I’m 26 years old at this point. Shouldn’t this be over by now?
It’s been 2 years of experimenting with different solutions, and now that my skin has been relatively clear for the past 6 months, I feel comfortable sharing what worked for me. Please remember-- everybody is different. So I give you what works for me. It may not work for you. But it’s worth a shot!
I’ll admit, I don’t eat a perfectly clean diet. I try to limit gluten, sugar, and dairy, but I do still allow myself to eat them. My mental health is more important to me than clear skin. And for me, I don’t like putting long term restrictions on my diet. I may eliminate the common anti-inflammatory foods like gluten, sugar, and dairy in cycles, but rarely all at once.
The first thing I start the morning with is apple cider vinegar and water. This balances the pH of my digestive system and controls bloating.
Then, I will make a drink either green tea, maca mocha, or if you coffee sits well with you, then you can do that (coffee makes me too anxious). In my drink, I mix in collagen peptides, coconut oil, cinnamon and MCT oil. The peptides have protein in them and are amazing for healing the gut and making the skin appear firmer. I seriously noticed my lips appearing plumper since taking this every day. The coconut and MCT oil provide a healthy dose of fats for your morning so your body starts the day full and satisfied. The cinnamon just tastes delicious and is good for the metabolism.
Then around 9am I will drink a smoothie (normally I make this in the morning and bring it to work). In the smoothie I do two heaping handfuls of spinach, one handful of blueberries, almond milk, and the MAGIC ingredient -- GREEN VIBRANCE!
I swear by this green vibrance stuff. It has 1 billion probiotics and LOADS of green superfoods. It’s literally the healthiest thing you could do for yourself. If you do any of my recommendations, take this magic potion.
The rest of the day I eat normally -- I have lots of food at lunch and dinner but will snack on nuts or veggies and hummus in between.
I also supplement with Evening Primrose Oil which helps balance the hormones and has lots of healthy omegas.
As for washing the face, I like to keep things as simple as possible. I use a charcoal bar I found on amazon for cheap AF. And then I make my own facial oil because I’m cheap AF and don’t want to shell out $60 for a product that lasts only a month.
Here's the recipe:
I bought a dropper on amazon and then filled the dropper with ¾ grapeseed oil, then filled the rest with tamanu oil , and then sprinkled a few drops of chamomile oil in there. I use that oil once or twice a day, depending on if I wash my face in the morning (lez be honest, I’m lazy about skincare).
And that’s it! My skin has dramatically improved and I feel confident AF walking around without makeup on. Rarely do I put any makeup on, but when I do, I feel confident AF also!
